本片是导演扬•特洛尔1971年的名作《大移民》的续篇，两部电影均改编自Vilhelm Moberg的The Emigrants系列小说。本片取材此系列的后两部小说，The Settlers 和The Last Letter Home，讲述一批瑞典移民在19世纪中期的明尼苏达州建造家园的故事。所有的童话传奇都来自梦想。讲述罗斯（安吉丽娜·朱莉饰）一家人原本过著幸福快乐的日子，她拥有三个天真爱作梦的孩子。但当哥哥意外去世，面对丧失挚亲之痛，整个家庭都陷入悲伤的情绪之中。两个姐弟爱丽丝与彼得更为了逃避残酷的现实，分别走入仙境世界（Wonder land）及梦幻岛（Neverland），姐弟俩后来分别成为了《爱丽丝梦游仙境》和《彼得·潘》的主角。。In a future world ruled by good-looking people, a terrorist group of mutants led by Ramon Yarritu kidnap the daughter of Orujo, a rich businessman, to claim for the rights of the ugly people.
