Story of an inventor who, suffering betrayal in life, makes a career of it by becoming a clown whose act consists of getting slapped by all the other clowns. He falls in love with another circus performer, and those who betrayed him enter his life yet again.。在二战后期，纳粹德国被占领的最后日子里，丹麦的一位民间中学校长收容500多名德国难民，他和妻子丽斯面临着无法解决的两难境地。如果他们一家帮助难民，就会被打上叛国的烙印，有可能失去一切。然而，如果他们不伸出援手，很多人很可能会死。与此同时，他们发现12岁的儿子索伦已经开始协助抵抗运动。这个家庭被逼到了极限，他们现在必须做出一个永远改变他们生活的选择......。
