江户末期，已有250年未曾发生过战争，贫穷的武士们，有人因此选择离开藩属，成为流浪的武士或是浪人。都筑杢之进（池松壮亮饰）也是其中一名流浪的武士，他来到江户近郊的一户农家，帮忙干活，换取粮食维生。为防自己的剑术日益生疏，他一方面每日挥汗练习，一方面利用木刀传授剑艺给农家子弟市助（前田隆成饰）。市助的姊姊小优（苍井优饰）面对两人终日热衷於剑术，总是冷眼相待，却也和杢之进彼此的情愫渐生。当时日本因外国黑船来航，要求幕府结束锁国政策，长年的太平之势，开始出现动汤。小优最担心的事情莫过於杢之进前往中央参与动乱，那表示他和弟弟赔上性命的日子也逐渐逼近。。怪物艾比乐乐为了躲避军方的袭击，躲进了一个名叫亚当的小男孩家里。很快，亚当便在车库里发现了它。亚当在学校的图书馆里查探艾比乐乐的相关资料却一无所获。但其实，外人口中凶狠残暴的怪物艾比乐乐一点也不凶恶，反而是个黑乎乎的萌胖子。很快，艾比乐乐和亚当交起了朋友，有了艾比乐乐的特殊能力帮助，亚当度过了一段快乐的时光。然而，军方派来抓捕艾比乐乐的部队也随之而来，他们派兵包围了艾比乐乐和亚当。最终，亚当为了保护艾比乐乐，不惜挡在了艾比乐乐的身前，准备迎接军方的炮火攻击，因为亚当在同艾比乐乐相处的过程中，早已经把艾比乐乐当成了自己最好的朋友。。Disarmingly realistic in its depiction of the realities of frontier life, Heartland is a strong antidote to the cliches of traditional Westerns. This semi-documentary slice of life is based on the diaries of Elmore Randall Stewart about her days on the Wyoming frontier in the early 20th century. It's a strongly feminist statement about a woman raising her small daughter alone and scrapping for a living by working for a shy Scottish rancher. Director Richard Pearce brings an endearing touch to a film that is helped greatly by the dazzling cinematography of Fred Murphy. Conchata Ferrell and Rip Torn star in this small film that substitutes veracity for a high-powered plot. Pearce worked as a cinematographer on Woodstock and other documentaries before making his directorial debut. Winner of the 1980 Berlin Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival。
